Culture

The many tours available in and around Tampere offer interesting insights into Finnish culture.

One possibility is a tour of the Iittala glass factory to take a closer look at glass blowing, learn about the history of Finnish glass-making at the glass museum and buy some designer souvenirs at the factory outlet.

Those with an interest in art, no matter how casual, will appreciate a visit to the atelier home of 19th century Finnish sculptor Emil Wikström amongst scenic settings in Visavuori. The excursion can be made by boat or coach and the tour combined with a visit to the Iittala glass factory. Another unique attraction is the wilderness atelier of Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Finland’s most renowned painter in the national-romantic style. Back in Tampere, the Sara Hildén Art Museum provides an opportunity to see some high-standard Finnish and international modern art.

A tour of local churches not only introduces masterpieces of Finnish art history and modern architecture, it also provides meaningful insights into the country’s history. It’s also possible to arrange a small music recital in one of the churches. Tampere Cathedral is renowned as a superb example of national romantic style architecture – and famed for fascinating frescoes that have been a source of controversy for more than a century!

Tampere’s industrial heritage is an essential aspect of the city’s history. Several walking tours are available which reveal Tampere’s industrial heritage from a variety of perspectives. Special menus with a historic theme to suit these tours are available at the Finlayson Palace and Ziberia restaurants.

Music adds sparkle to the evening and makes any social event more festive. The highly capable programme department at Tampere Hall will be pleased to produce a tailor-made musical programme and concert especially for your congress.
