Sustainability Policy

Tampere - a Sustainable City for Events and Meetings

The Background of Sustainability in Tampere

Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (ref: United Nations). When a large group of people travel together for an event or meeting, they will inevitably use lots of resources. Therefore, we encourage all conference organisers to make sustainable choices.

In Tampere, the work for sustainability during events started already in 1992, when Tampere Hall was one of the first conference centers in the world to launch sustainability programs and policies. In 2014, Tampere Hall became the first ever congress center to obtain the Nordic Ecolabel.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Tampere Convention Bureau is strongly committed to environmental sustainability and stewardship. We recognize that aiming for good performance in sustainability is an on-going learning and development process.

Our decisions and actions are guided by the ICCA Scandinavian Sustainable Meetings Accord. As of June 2016, we decided to get involved with the Global Destination Sustainability Index.

Through policy and operational practices Tampere Convention Bureau is dedicated to continuous improvement in:

  • incorporation of environmentally responsible initiatives in decision making.

  • every-day work practices that promote sustainability, including energy savings measures, increasing the use of renewable resources, decreasing production of waste materials and choosing locally produced goods and services whenever appropriate.

  • providing educational programs and encouraging environmental awareness for staff, partners, conference and event organizers, delegates and the local community in positive environmental practices.

  • establishment of sustainability indicators to enable monitoring, reporting and improvement measures.

Our Vision

We envision, that in the near future, Tampere will be widely known as one of the world's best choices when choosing a sustainable conference destination.

Our Goals and Actions

Our measurable goal is to fit within the top 20 cities in the Global Destination Sustainability Index.

Tampere Convention Bureau encourages all its partners to show strong commitment towards improvement in sustainable policies and practices in order to work together towards a more sustainable Tampere.

Tampere Convention Bureau has taken the following actions:
  • Practical guidelines for our office personnel on how to minimize the use of resources and sort out the recyclable materials during the working day.

  • Communication Policy stating, that our partners' sustainability initiatives and achievements are actively promoted through social media.
