Hotel adjacent to Tampere Hall by Marriott International Inc.
Following a tender for the planning and building of a new hotel adjacent to Congress and Concert Centre Tampere Hall, the City of Tampere has decided on a winner. The new partner is a working group consisting of Architectural office ALA Ltd, building company SRV Group and Hotel operator Marriott International Inc.
The jury agreed that the winning plan sat well in its planned surroundings, was of high quality and met the criteria set for the hotel. The winning design has direct indoor access to Tampere Hall, and offers numerous possibilities for cooperation between the hotel and congress centre.
Getting the international hotel chain Marriott to Tampere is significant on a national level – the well-known international brand has 38 million regular customers. The American hotel chain has three hotels in the Nordic countries so far: two in Sweden and one in Denmark. Their first hotel in Finland will open in Espoo in 2015. ALA Architects has designed numerous prominent buildings both in Finland and abroad.
“A hotel adjacent to Tampere Hall will significantly increase our competitiveness. Our customers have expressed the need for a hotel, and it will benefit them in numerous ways when organising a congress at Tampere Hall”, says Managing Director Paulina Ahokas. “The winning design brings more upscale architecture to Tampere, and makes the whole area more attractive for the international market”, she continues.
The main criteria in the tender were architecture and cityscape, where the jury evaluated the dimensions and the degree of innovation of the hotel, as well as Tampere Hall’s position in the cityscape. The functionality of the hotel was evaluated keeping in mind internal movement, synergy and cooperation with Tampere Hall, the use of the lot, energy efficiency and connections with the city network.
Building a hotel requires a zoning change from the Tampere city council. Before conveyancing, Tampere Hall will make a multiyear contract with the winning working group. The hotel will not compete with Tampere Hall, but rather work in synergy with the Congress and Concert centre. The aim is to build the hotel during 2015-2017.
